Design Question
Problem Space
Users often struggle with direction-finding and survival techniques in unfamiliar environments in the great outdoors.
Navigation Challenges
“How might we create an intuitive and reliable experience to help outdoor enthusiasts and travelers get a holistic experience during extended periods of outdoor activities?”
Exploring Problem Space
Lack of Preparedness
Users carry extensive gear and rely on pre-made food supplies. Without proper guidance, they may be unsure of which resources are safe for foraging, leading to missed opportunities or even health risks.
Uncertain Conditions
Unpredictable environments can lead to uncertainty when it comes to food sources, navigation, and overall safety. This can hinder exploration, as users may worry about getting lost or running out of resources.
Navigating unfamiliar terrains can be challenging, especially without clear landmarks or trails. Users may struggle with orienting themselves, which can lead to getting lost or deviating from their planned routes.
Primary Research Findings
I surveyed and interviewd a sample size of 15 users, with varied experience levels to understand their experiences while performing a range of outdoor activities that required them to utilize their survival skills for a long time period.
“Hiking solo can be a bit risky. Getting injured or dehydration can quickly turn serious if you’re out there on your own without the right care or resources.”
“GPS is helpful, but It's smart to carry a physical map and compass as backup, so you’re not caught off guard if your phone fails or loses signal.”
“Unpredictable weather makes camping dangerous. We must be prepared for unexpected rainstorms, or temperature changes to stay safe.”
